There's a far-away, long-ago world that I hear about all the time, yet know not nearly enough about: Soviet Russia. Russian watches have been a way for me to peek over the fence. Many of the vintage watches I've found were given to civil servants to celebrate achievements or decades of service. Their dials often display cryptic imagery of tractors, trains, submarines, airplanes, and rockets. These images mean something to millions of people. I'll never understand even a fraction of a percent about that place and culture. But, wearing a handmade, old Russian watch lets me get just a tiny bit closer. From there it's easy to see we share the very same hours, minutes, and seconds.

While this particular watch may not feature celebrations of the everyday worker, its striking design and Cyrillic text catch the eye and make it stand out. The text on the back case reads ""Water protected, Antishock, Steel back"." Although originally sold as a men's watch, it looks great on wrists of every gender.

    •• RUSSIAN WATCH HISTORY ••

The USSR's "First State Watch Factory" was founded in 1930 on the orders of Joseph Stalin. Since there had never been a watch factory in Russia before—only small workshops—there was no proper equipment. The Russian government needed to create a factory. Through the Amtorg Trading Corporation, they purchased the entire Dueber-Hampden Watch Company, including all the manufacturing equipment, parts on hand, and work in progress. Twenty-eight boxcars of machinery left Canton, Ohio together with 23 Dueber Hampden employees to teach the Russians the craft of watchmaking. (I've included a picture of those watchmakers, courtesy of Alan Garratt.)

In 1931, the First State Watch Factory produced pocket watches that were presented at an official ceremony in Moscow's Revolution Theater. The Hampden pattern watch movements, called the Type-1, are easily recognized by their distinct "twin finger" bridge layout. The first watches were an instant popular success and became a symbol of Russian autonomy and self reliance.

    •• KIROVSKIE BRAND ••

The Kirovskie brand (Кировские, likely named after the prominent early Bolshevik leader, Sergei Kirov) was an extremely successful line of watches produced in the late 1950s and early 1960s. These were the premier Russian watches worn by cosmonauts and military commanders. The movement was an at-the-time cutting edge caliber 24XX series with central second hand. This was a complete redesign of the original caliber 2608 (widely used in Pobedas and Moskvas) in order to produce a much thinner movement.

Kirovskies were manufactured with numerous dial styles (sunburst, matte, embossed), case shapes (classic, crab, miniature), case materials (chrome-plated, gold-plated, solid gold), and colors.

The Kirovskie brand was retired in 1964. Many Poljot watches were subsequently produced in exactly the same style (the only difference being the brand name printed on the dial).

    •• THE POLJOT ••

When the 1st Moscow Watch Factory produced the Poljot (translated as Flight) in 1964, the Poljot golden era began.  This time spans through the 60s until the end of the 70s. Poljot is a brand associated with space missions and quality vintage chronographs.  The Poljot watch factory has been dismantled and there is very little chance we will ever see these elegant Russian watches again.

The true speciality of this movement is its balance, which consists of a golden-toned Glucydur screw balance, beared in two inhouse Poljot-Kirovskie shock protections and connected to a Breguet type hairspring. The Cyrillic markings on the movement display: 1st Moscow Watch Factory, 17 jewels; Kirowa-Poljot. It is in excellent mechanical condition and functions at or very near as well as it did when new.

It is in good, used cosmetic condition. The acrylic crystal is brand new. The "crab shaped" case and gold dial show signs of wear commensurate with age and use. My photos are very high resolution, showing tiny specks of dust and micro-scratches that aren’t noticeable to the naked eye. Inspect the photos carefully to be sure the condition is up to your standards.

It's not about telling time, or any of that stuff. It's about how it makes you feel. For creative individualists, a watch is a powerful tool that amplifies the expression of your individuality.

I offer a six-month warranty on the inner mechanical movements of this watch. Contact me if anything goes awry and I'll help set it straight. You can also upgrade to an extended warranty, which covers the mechanicals for a total of 18 months. (Note: the band and crystal are not covered, nor is damage from impact or water.) All shipping costs will be covered by the warranty. Repairing or servicing a watch like this generally costs $150-250, so the warranty is a great way to avoid those sort of service costs!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Express shipping via private carriers like FedEx, DHL, and UPS is available upon request. Pricing is on a case by case basis. Prices range from about 75 USD for DHL Express to 140 USD for FedEx and UPS Express.

Can I get a different colored watchband?

I have watchbands in many different styles, colors and materials. If you love the watch but want a different color band, send me a message. I'll see if I have the color you want in my inventory. If I don't, you can swap out the band for any strap you'd like by buying one online or taking it to your local jeweler or watch repair store.

Does my watch need a battery?

    It depends on the watch.

    1) Mechanical (hand-winding): These watches use a spring and gears to run. There is no battery. You must wind the watch once daily for it to keep running. Most of my watches are this kind.

    2) Mechanical (automatic/kinetic): These use a spring and gears as well as a swinging pendulum that rotates as you move throughout the day. It winds itself. You don't need a battery and you don't need to wind it.

    3) Quartz: These use batteries. Your watch will include a brand new battery. They can last anywhere from six months to a few years, depending on the watch.

I changed my mind! Can I cancel my order and get a full refund?

We don't accept cancellations for a refund. Instead, we offer you store credit which you can use on any of our other items. This store credit is good for one year.

Will the vintage watchband fit me?

Use a measuring tape to measure around your wrist.

All my detailed descriptions include the max wrist size of the bracelet. Bracelets are standardized. They're not an integral part of the watch itself. It's easy to change the band.

NOTE: YOU CAN NOT RETURN THE WATCH BECAUSE THE BRACELET IS THE WRONG SIZE. You're paying for the watch itself—the bracelet is basically free.

How do I return an item?

Contact us and we will guide you through the process. Note that the paperwork, documents, packaging, photographs, cards, and anything else in the package MUST be returned in the condition which we sent them to you in. If anything is missing or damaged we will deduct the value of those items from your refund.

    Bigger/Smaller Bracelets?

The bracelet (aka band or strap) is usually NOT an integral part of the "watch" itself. It's normal (and somewhat expected) that you'll have a jeweler adjust the band to fit you, or replace the band with one that you can try on in person. Watchbands are standardized and available from any jeweler, watch shop, and online.

NOTE: YOU CAN NOT RETURN THE WATCH BECAUSE THE BRACELET IS THE WRONG SIZE. You're paying for the watch itself—the bracelet is basically free.

What do I do if the bracelet isn't the right size?

YOU CAN NOT RETURN THE WATCH BECAUSE THE BRACELET IS THE WRONG SIZE. You're paying for the watch itself—the bracelet is basically free. The bracelet size is listed in the product description. And, any jeweler will adjust the bracelet/band size for you as needed.

A watch is like a ring or other fine piece of jewelry, in that you need to have a jeweler adjust it to fit your perfectly. This is expected and normal. You may even find that you want to replace the bracelet. Bracelets are not an integral part of the watch. They are interchangeable. They can be replaced easily—and quite inexpensively. You can do it yourself or have your local jeweler or watch repair shop do it for you.
